I had an idea that might help mitigate server lag.

So from what I understand, hoppers contribute to server lag, but putting containers, ideally droppers, on top of them helps mitigate that lag.
I don't think most people are aware of this. Also, I'm sure there are plenty of people who leave their hoppers uncovered simply because they don't want to waste time or materials on droppers.

My proposed solution is the "/dropper <quantity>" command.
Available to all players, they simply need to use this command to have free droppers put into their inventory.
Also, whenever a player places a hopper, have the following message appear, similar to the claim alerts.
"Please place droppers on top of uncovered hoppers to help prevent server lag. Use the command "/dropper <quantity>" for free droppers.". To avoid annoyance, have it only appear if it hasn't been displayed for that player in 24 hours.

I think this could really help spread awareness and activism among the player base when it comes to preventing hopper lag.

Well then nobody knows about it and if nobody knows about it it's useless :/, hence the second part of my suggestion, the alert.

I sure didn't know about it. What is the command? how does it work?

If I recall correctly, it's a feature that limits hoppers to 200 an area. As to what the size of that "area" is, I wouldn't know.

Ok, so that is not the same thing as my suggestion then.

Ok, that's a good idea but it isn't at all what I am suggesting.

It is a better idea to advocate use of water streams and observer fired dropper pipes than hopper chains, many people forget this so I believe it is a better idea to provide a warning on this instead, sorters storage and that should still be covered however. I also want to applaud you on not asking to put furnaces on top, which would create more lag than uncovered hoppers

What im trying to say is that we don't need a command that could be farmed to a ridiculous degree

That makes sense I suppose. Though I still think it would help to have a message pop up when players place hoppers explaining how they create lag and maybe linking to a page on applecraft.org that has tutorials on common alternatives to hoppers.

Sorry... but this has only been proven to slightly reduce lag so it's a waste of time putting droppers over all your hoppers, and also it's not as if hoppers are difficult to craft- they are just cobble and redstone

Every little bit helps, and even if droppers did nothing it would still help to spread awareness of hopper lag to encourage plays to place less of them in favor of more server friendly alternatives.

You need least 2x3x1 space for dropper setup

The point is there are hundreds of good suggestion and the server has to pick which ones are more worth investing the time into... and Ii don't think a /droppers command would be their highest priority

I think you are missing my point. I conceded to the futility of the /dropper command a few comments back already. I'm only advocating for the SECOND part of my original suggestion anymore.

I think hoppers are "push" instead of "pull". Meaning that it's entities that check if they have a hopper below them, and not hoppers that check if there is an entity above them. I think that, because of this reason, droppers above hoppers are probably not going to help.
