Have you ever sat at your computer thinking about the following:
"Why isn't my Mob Grinder spawning as fast as others?"
"Why aren't my Spawners working at all?"
    "How do Spawners work?"
"How can I improve my Mob Grinder?"

Well, all of this, and more, will be explained in simple to understand terms below.

    Quicks Bits of Information!
    What is a Mob Spawner/Grinder?
    How are Mob Spawners Obtained?
    What Mobs can be Spawned?

    What is a Mob Spawner/Grinder?
A Mob Spawner is a block that has the ability to spawn in mobs.
A Mob Grinder is a structure that uses natural spawning mechanics or an assortment of Spawners to spawn in mobs in a centralized area for the purpose of either gaining loot or experience in a short amount of time.

    How are Mob Spawners Obtained?
In Vanilla Minecraft, that is a world/server without plugins, mods, glitches, cheats, and so forth, it is impossible to obtain The Mob Spawners, however, may be found naturally generated across the Minecraft world, Or be bought from the Applecraft store.

    How Mob Spawners Work.
    The Mechanics.

Like many things in life, if you don't understand how it works, chances are, you won't be using it correctly or to it's full potential. Mob Spawners are not excluded from this.

    The Basics:
    • When is a Spawner Active?
    • Where is the Spawning Area?
    • What is the "Extended Zone"?
    • How often do Mobs Spawn?
    • What Limits When and Where a Mob can Spawn?
    • What are the Mob-Specific Requirements for Mob Spawners?

    When is a Spawner Active?
A Mob Spawner is active when a player is within 16 blocks from the center of the Mob Spawner.
There are 2 ways to identify an active Spawner:
    1. The Tiny Mob inside is rotating
    2. Small flames are coming out of the Spawner.

    Where is the Spawning Area?
The Spawning Area, for most mobs, is a 8x8x4 area surrounding the Spawner. This area is centered upon the North-West corner of the Spawner. To identify where the North-West corner is, simply look for when the coordinates are moving towards the negatives. So, if you are on X: 50, Y: 63, Z: 50, North-West would be towards X: 49, Y: 63, Z: 49

    What is the "Extended Zone"?
The "Extended Zone" is a phrase I use to describe the 17x17x9 area around the Spawner that limits spawning. The purpose of this area is to limit how many Mobs can spawn. By default, the maximum amount of Mobs a Spawner will spawn over time, while they are still within the Extended Zone, is 6. Once a total of 6 mobs is reached, the Spawner will no longer spawn and will continue to try to spawn until at the number of mobs is below 6.

    How often do Mobs Spawn?
Spawners generate Mobs in "Puffs". These puffs happen every 200 to 799 in-game ticks, which is about every 10 to 39.95 seconds. Every time a puff occurs, the spawner will attempt to generate anywhere from 1 to 4 mobs. The reason you may experience less than 4 Mobs spawning is due to a few limiting factors.

What Limits When and Where a Mob can Spawn?
A spawn will not occur if:
    • A Mob is attempting to spawn in the same space as another mob/entity.
    • A Mob is attempting to spawn in the same space as a block/solid object.
    • A Mob is attempting to spawn in the same place as a water or lava block.
    • If there are 6 or more of the same Mob-type within the "Extended Range".
    • The Mob-Specific Requirements are not met.

What are the Mob-Specific Requirements for Mob Spawners?
All Mobs have a specific set of conditions that must be met in order to spawn.

    General Conditions for All Mobs:
    • Difficulty must not be set to Peaceful.
    • Must not collide with any Blocks, Entities, Water, or Lava.
    • 6 Mobs must not be present within the Extended Zone.
    ________________________________________________________________________

I thought spawners could spawn mobs up to 4 blocks away, which makes the spawning area 9x9 (not 8x8). Otherwise great stuff. Summary:

    1. Put your spawner in the right place and on the right block (mooshrooms spawners have to be on mycelium for example)
    2. You stay within 16 blocks so spawner is active
    3. Make 9x9 spawn area with proper lighting for mobs to spawn in
    4. Make the extended area unable to spawn mobs (lighting, solid blocks, etc.)
    5. If you want max spawning, move spawned mobs out of extended area (drop them, water current, etc) so they can be collected/killed/grinded while others are still spawning.

    ;)
